Acupressure
Acupuncture points are areas of heightened electrical conductivity and are considered to be connected to the energetic pathways (known as meridians), according to traditional chinese medicine theory. Meridians are where the body’s vital energy “Qi”flows.
Acupressure massage is based on the same principles as acupuncture, but instead of using needles, acupressure stimulates these points by applying pressure through the fingers, hands, or elbows.
Specific points are selected depending on the patient’s constitution, goals & underlying patterns of disharmony present in the body - which may be manifesting as physical pain, stiffness, stress, digestive issues, headaches, brain fog or emotional imbalances.
Points are located via palpation ~ where the practitioner examines the body to locate areas that may be tender, sore, have a different texture or elicit a specific response. They also relate to traditional landmarks and measurements.
Acupressure has been shown to promote the body's natural healing processes and restore it back to a state of equilibrium. It alleviates various physical and mental conditions, including pain, stress, tension, headaches, nausea, and fatigue. It is also used for relaxation, enjoyment and general well-being.
Modern research shows that acupuncture points do have distinct characteristics including higher electrical conductivity, higher concentrations of nerve cells, mast cells & signaling molecules compared to surrounding areas - all of which contribute towards:
- Pain relief (Gate control theory, Endogenous Opioid system, Neurotransmitter
Modulation, regulates the sensitization of the central nervous system)
- Affects neurotransmitters - GABA, substance P, glutamate ~ all play a role in
processing emotional & physical pain.
- Reduction in inflammation (reduces the production and release of
pro-inflammatory substances)
- Relaxing muscles (increases release of serotonin which reduces pain & regulates
mood)
- Improved blood circulation
